A solid timber benchtop changes what a kitchen, bathroom or laundry feels like to use. At STADC Surfaces, we design and build custom timber benchtops for Adelaide homes, handcut from premium hardwoods and finished to your specification.
Classic American Oak, dramatic Blackwood, a bespoke vanity surface or something in between, we’ll build it to your exact dimensions. No standard sizes.
A timber benchtop is one of the hardest-working elements in any home. Unlike stone or laminate, solid timber has warmth and character that improves with age. Small scratches and marks become part of the story rather than reasons to replace it.
Every timber benchtop we produce is made to order. We don’t work from stock lengths or standard widths. We cut, join, plane and finish each benchtop to your exact measurements, and help you choose the right species, thickness and finish for how you’ll actually use it. life.
The kitchen is where a timber benchtop earns its reputation. A well-made solid timber kitchen benchtop is warm to work on, forgiving on dropped utensils, and develops a character that stone and laminate can’t replicate. We supply and install custom kitchen benchtops across a full range of hardwood species.
Our kitchen benchtops are available in a range of thicknesses and profiles, with square edge, bullnose and custom edge options. Every kitchen benchtop is finished with a hardwearing sealant suited to the demands of food prep, heat and daily cleaning.
Popular applications: full kitchen benchtop runs, kitchen island tops, breakfast bar tops, butler’s pantry benchtops.
A kitchen island benchtop in solid timber is one of the most requested pieces we build. A wide-format island top in American Walnut or Tasmanian Blackwood creates a natural focal point in any open-plan kitchen. American Oak works beautifully against contemporary white cabinetry.
We build island tops to any dimension, with bookmatched boards and custom waterfall edge options.
Popular specifications: waterfall edge islands, wide-format single slab tops, bookmatched multi-board islands, overhanging breakfast bar tops.
Solid timber vanity tops add something to a bathroom that no engineered surface can match. With the right timber and a properly applied waterproof finish, they hold up well in daily use and pair well with our custom timber vanity cabinetry.
We recommend Tasmanian Oak and American Oak for most bathroom applications due to their stability and finish compatibility. All species we stock can be prepared for bathroom use with the appropriate sealing process.
Popular applications: freestanding vanity tops, wall-hung vanity benchtops, double basin vanity tops, his-and-hers bathroom benchtops.
That’s what our free consultation is for. We’ll come to your home, look at your space and help you choose the right species, thickness and finish for your benchtop project, with no obligation.
Species is just one part of the decision. Thickness, edge profile and finish all shape how the finished benchtop looks and performs. We offer the following standard options, with custom options available on request.

Free Measure & Consultation: We visit your home to take precise measurements and understand your brief: the look you’re after, how the benchtop will be used, and the substrate it will sit on. We bring timber and finish samples so you can see and feel the options in your own space.ee and feel the options in your own space.

No Standard Sizes Every benchtop we produce is made to your exact measurements. We handle non-standard widths, angles, cutouts and complex configurations that off-the-shelf options can't.

Not Veneer There's a significant difference between a solid timber benchtop and a veneer-over-substrate product. We work exclusively in solid hardwood, which means your benchtop can be sanded and refinished multiple times rather than replaced when the surface wears through.

We're a local Adelaide business and everything we build is made here, not imported or outsourced. When you deal with STADC Surfaces, you deal directly with the people who design and build your benchtop.

A quality solid timber benchtop, properly maintained, will outlast the house it's installed in. It's an investment that pays off over decades, not something you'll replace in ten years.

Thingking of installing a new kitchen, you would be crazy if you didn't speak to Ezra or Nick before you buy. I would rarely be so adamant but their craftsmanship and integrity which in my opinion second to none. If you want to chat with me direct ask them for my mobile number, I would be happy to talk to you. Nic and team have created an absolutely amazing vanity unit for us. Their care and attention to maintaining the natural elements of the wood are a testament of the knowlege and experience they bring to the craft of cabinetry. Thanks again STADC team.Posted on Google Michelle Lee (Wolf)Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Nic has been incredibly helpful from the start. I had wanted a custom bar table done, plus quotes to build a very particular type of shoe rack. Nic came back with advice that the shoe rack in the style I wanted would cost quite a lot in materials and would not be worth it for what it is (just a shoe rack!). He suggested some cheaper alternatives that I could just buy. I appreciated his advice and sincerity as he could have easily just taken the job and money. Nic did a great job with the custom bar table I wanted. He suggested a timber yard I could visit to find wood that would suit my current furniture. When I chose and paid for the slab, the yard was kind to let me keep it there so that Nic could pick it up. Through emails and phone calls, Nic kept me updated and made sure we're all on the same page on exactly how I wanted the table to be made. He gave me options for the table legs so I felt like I was part of the process the whole time. He always ensured that everything was cost effective for me, including the delivery of the table. Overall I'm super satisfied with the service and how helpful and communicative Nic was. Thanks!!Posted on Google Megan TurnerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Nic and team did their best to match the style of the old narrow cut and lamenated blackwood bench tops. The end result was excellent and my client was very pleased. The right sealant depends on how the benchtop will be used. For kitchens, we typically recommend a hardwax oil or penetrating oil for a natural look, or a polyurethane lacquer where higher water resistance is preferred. For bathrooms and laundries, polyurethane lacquer gives the best protection. We’ll recommend and apply the appropriate finish system for every benchtop we build and walk you through care and maintenance before installation.
Solid timber is naturally water-resistant to a degree, but not inherently waterproof. The applied finish is what provides the real barrier against moisture. With the right finish properly applied and maintained, a timber benchtop holds up well in kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. Like all natural materials, it needs some basic care: wipe up spills promptly, don’t leave standing water, and re-oil or re-coat as recommended.
The cost depends on the timber species, dimensions, thickness, edge profile and finish. A standard kitchen benchtop run in American Oak typically starts from around $800–$1,500 per linear metre installed, while premium timbers and thicker profiles sit at the higher end. Island benchtops and complex configurations are quoted individually. We always provide a detailed written quote before any work begins.
From confirmed order, a standard kitchen or bathroom benchtop typically takes 3–5 weeks in our workshop. Larger projects, complex edge profiles or high-demand periods may extend this. We’ll confirm lead times in your quote and keep you informed throughout.
For most kitchen benchtop applications, 40mm is the most popular choice. Substantial enough to look premium but practical for everyday use. If you want a statement island top, 60mm or 80mm creates more visual impact. We’ll talk through thickness options relative to your cabinetry design at your consultation.
In many cases, yes. If your existing cabinetry is structurally sound and the substrate is suitable, we can supply and install a new timber benchtop over it. We’ll assess the existing cabinetry at your measure-up and let you know if any preparation work is required.
